UT2k4 is awesome. The fact that I'm going to the trouble to make a thread about a first-person shooter should be enough to make anyone curious. For those not in the know, it's a futuristic FPS with several modes of play, including the quite famous 'Capture the Flag'. Other modes include (but are not named) Free For All, War, and something that resembles Football. Only instead of tackling people, you kill them. You can choose from two teams, which are imaginitively named 'Red Team' and 'Blue Team'. Unlike most FPS games, where the gameplay consists of shooting your enemy before s/he shoots you, tactics can be and often are used. I guess all that's left to say is that UT2k4 is to First Person Shooters what Mario is to classic games. Get the demo (which has a surprising amount of content for a demo, including netplay) from www.unreal.com. That is all.

Yes, it's good, but no, it's not that good that it is to FPS what Mario is to classic games. You could say that DooM is to FPS what Mario is to OTHER classic games. UT2k4 is just a better version of UT2k3 which was quite dissapointing and was by far not as cool as classic UT, but even UT2k4 will never be the classic that UT was, or Unreal for that matter. And not all about UT2k4 is good, I mean, the weapons are good, the graphics are good, the sound is good, some of the music is awsome, but d**n, I do hate that single player input lag bug that game has when playing with either a logitech MX500 or a MX510... And they keep telling people who request a fix that it's not their problem, but it's a faulty driver from logitech ?! Heck, I don't even use logitech's drivers and still, after about 20 minutes of play (or sometimes even earlier) the input just starts responding with a 1 second or more delay... For any kind of game, this is unacceptable and I wonder that if it were logitech's fault, why doesn't it occur in UT or UT2k3?

I tried watching a clip of someone playing Doom. I couldn't see anything. So I have no idea if it looks good/plays well. =p And, considering it goes back to the Amiga, it falls into the category of 'classic games'. I see you acknowledged that, so I'd like to point out that Mario is _THE_ example of a classic video game, because the Famicom/Nintendo was as popular as previous non-arcade consoles were not.
No game I've played has ever been able to match up to the original, so it's pointless to even mention that the original Unreal Tournament was better. People who haven't played either game will know this, because it's one of the univeral Truths that sequels lose something of the original game.
That aside, the rest is a matter of preference...and a $10 keyboard from the super market of your choice will solve the control problem. I use a Compaq keyboard, myself.

The sequel rule only works for Movies. I find game sequels to usualy get better and better... with a few bad cases.

I refuse to replace (parts of) my hardware to play 1 game I can do without... I might consider it when I would really have bought that game, but even then I would miss my beautifull logitech mouse And btw. my keyboard isn't the problem, that's a mitsumi classic standard ps2 keyboard without any buttons on it that aren't neccesary for normal pc operation...

Generic mice are better anyway. When was the last time ANYONE reported having problems (aside from less than 6 months before breaking) with a generic mouse or keyboard? I've never heard any. =p
Anyway, for those of us who have machines leet and pipes phat enough to play it, this is my top recommendation for the month for games to pirate legally obtain with the help of money.

I buy games, seriously I do, but before I do I want to check them out to see if they are worth my well earned money, and games that happen to malfunction on my in any other way perfectly functioning computer (UT2k4) or games that lack in playtime (DooM 3 and many others). And then, this follows: Procedure DooMBuy(goodfactor) var min: integer; begin min:=10; if goodfactor>min then DooM.go.buy.game(game) else DooM.go.notbuy.game(game) end;

I loved the original UT, even better then Q3 to be honest. Doom is, however the classic FPS at its best. Didn't that come out a little after the first wolfenstien though? I still remember Shadow Warrior, and the first dark forces... Hate to see where they'd be if doom never came out...

Dark Forces would at least have come quite a bit later that it now has as it runs on the DooM engine. If that one wouldn't have existed the Build engine might still have been developed by Ken Silverman and Dark Forces might have used that one, but luckily DooM was there and it uses that engine instead, because the Build engine is rubbish... Shadow Warrior on the other hand runs on the Build engine... (same engine as Duke 3D and Blood, bad engine doesn't neccesarily mean bad game ) Wolfenstein wasn't even the first commercial FPS, one was earlier, also from id software. It's called The Catacomb Abbys which is good fun too

Okay. You all need to get this game. If nothing else, get the demo! www.unreal.comEven if it isn't really your thing, give it a try. I was/am a sword-wielding RPG kind of guy who would have all firearms in the real world destroyed if that were possible. Bows forever! But I love this game. There's a whole lot more to it than pointing and clicking. GET THIS GAME! You can easily find a torrent to pirate it, or if you're manipulative enough, I'm fairly certain it's still on the shelves and you could get your parents to get it for you or something. I'll be more than happy to show you all the ropes.
