Well, I've heard that Phantom Brave is mucho good. I haven't played it, myself. I actually know next to nothing about it. Too bad there's no one here who DOES know a lot about it, eh? Well, I'll share what little knowledge I have...
Phantom Brave is a Turn-Based Strategy game with a unique combat system. You take on the role of some chick who can call forth ghosts (PHANTOM brave...) to help keep her narrow ass alive. There are many types of phantoms, ranging from humanoid merchants to bestial fighters.
If you've played Final Fantasy Tactics, you're probably familiar with the tile system they use. The tile system has nothing to do with Phantom Brave. I brought it to your attention in an attempt to kill your brain cells. Phantom Brave uses a spherical system. A spell affects units in a circular area.
If you have three ground unit enemies lined up, with two air enemies lined up above them, and have a spell going in the center, only one of those flying enemies is going to get hit. If you don't understand, that's too bad. If only we had someone who knew what he was talking about... d**n it.

...I heard Phantom Brave, and was thus so called. Strap yourself in my friends, for this is going to be long.
Story aside, you confine created Phantoms to objects that have spiritual energy. Trees, rocks, weapons, ect. Your phantom will then take the place of that object, and get some of the object's stats(i.e. a phantom confined to a rock would be slower, but would have stronger defence). Phantoms can't stay on the physical plane for long, usualy 3-5 rounds. Everything in this game centers around energy. Your character gains energy, if you give a character a weapon, then the weapon will gain energy and 'grow up' with the character(you can get a phantom black-smith to harness the energies into level-ups or new skills for the weapon). You can combine objects such as weapons with a character, weapons to weapons, or charcters to other characters by combining their energies. If excess energy is left over, you can use it to bring the skills along with the stats during the fusion. You can even ascribe 'titles' to characters(i.e. GradeA Fighter, Wise Witch, ect.), to change their stats. Each character starts with maybe two skills, by combining with weapons, they can get that weapon's skills. Any skill they(or a weapon) has has it's own level. For instance, if as sword is used by CharcaterA, and charA uses only 'Killer Spin', then that sword will be great at doing 'Killer Spin', so the next guy or girl can use it with added ease, or you can combine it with another character, so that character will be able to use a powerful 'Killer Spin' in battle without having to use that sword, because the sword will be part of that character's soul. Confused yet? Hurrah.
Note: This game is said to be the most confusing and hard to understand game out there right now.
Now then, you can steal weapons from ennemies in battle, you can pick up weapons or objects(starfish, boxes, trees...anything can be used as a weapon, and has it's own skills and leveling system...yep...), or even other members of your party(who also have levels made just for the occasion that they're picked up and used as a weapon), and hell, you can pick up an ennemy and use it to beat other ennemies senseless. In one battle I picked up a Necromancer and used his 'summon an army of freaking skeletons' spell to kill the skeletons already on the battlefield.
The game is long. The box says there's only 20 episodes to the game, but right now I'm on hour 52 or so and am still on episode 19, and there's plenty of hidden and extra dungeons afterwards I'm told, and you can even create a Dungeon Monk phantom to create randomly generated dungeons to train in.
Speaking of that guy...fighting isn't the only way to increase exp. Merchants can level up by buying and selling. Healers can heal in and out of battle for exp. DMs can get exp by creating, modifying, and generally doing stuff with dungeons, blacksmiths get better by smithing, ect. ect.
I said story asside, that's because the story would easily be longer then what I've already written. Just rest assured, it's very original and very, very good.
Art is good, great backgrounds, nice sprites, and the story scenes have some of the best animations I've seen in an RPG.
Music...my God...I cannot attempt to do justice to this game's music. A full Japanese orchestra with some very special talents, written by a composer who knows how to invoke and choke feelings out of the chords of the instruments. There have been many times in a battle I've stopped and had the controller drop to the floor as I listen with my jaw dropped to the heavenly notes that approach my ears.
In short, this is the greatest game I've ever played. Yes, I Zade, am saying this game is better than Super Metroid. I know...I know...

Oh, my! Someone who knows about Phantom Brave! What a coincidence. Perhaps he knows about other things that the other users are simply ignorant of - such as the proper use of the spear.
Perhaps he could stick around and post a bit.
On topic: If I wind up going to the same college as you, I'll probably commandeer your Cube. Just so you know. =)

I'm sure I could write at length on spear-handling technique, but the game is for PS2, not cube.

Uhm... Believe it or not, that's actually what I meant to type. I told my brother I was going to break into his house and use his PS2 once I got Phantom Brave, if I got it.

I got this game a week or so ago, I found it okay, a little bit muddy in terms of game play so far, not bad but it has made me start to think I should have gotten God of War instead.

I got this game, I got it because I'd played disgea which was brilliant game (oddly this forum reminds me of that game) anyway I found it rather soppy compared to disgea anyway it was actually a challange, untill the end of the game where you go off in the side quests. They were just uneccisarily easy and annoying. Otherwise this game was really good, with the only other problem i had was the characters vanishing after a certain number of turns, making some levels a complete pregnant dog. Still, was a good game untill (as is with 99% of games) you complete the main story.
