The N64 controller is adequate, but I'd rather use a keyboard or just a controller with two analog sticks.

I think the N64 controller is one of few on which "simple" FPS games are well playable... It doesn't beat the keyboard-mouse combination, but of all (console)game-controllers it comes closest.

I personally found the N64 controller to be not only the most practical, but also the most comfortable and easiest to hold I have ever used.

I find the Playstation controller to be the most comfortable. It closely follows the SNES layout, which proved to be highly efficient, and actually improved the design by modifying the D-Pad to be less abrasive. The analog sticks are easy to use, and overall, it fits the hands near perfectly. Too bad the PS2 games suck.
P.S. The Xbox controller is too heavy, too large, with not enough space for the fingers, and too many buttons you actually have to shift your hand to press. Down with the Xbox!

Now, I'm going to trump all you N64 lovers. The Xbox controller (and to a lesser extent, the PS2 controller) is incredibly hard to damage. Trust me, I've tried. Thousands of hours of Halo wear on the joysticks, and the typical abuses (dropping/throwing/etc.) The N64 controller, however, was incredibly fragile. Lame. Your analog stick got worn and loose and just generally nutsty. That was horrible.

I loiked the 64 one and all, but I agree with Kaleb on the loose analog stick. That was allways really annoying. I really quite like the Gamecubeone, but that's only cause I use it the most probably.

I really like the gamecube one, it too is neigh indestructable....however Kaleb, I must say the PS2 controler is infact just as easily damaged as the N64 one. It cracks after a single enraged fit (my friend not me before anyone says this...he then threw his controler at my head and it shattered completely.) It also seems to have rather than a loose analouge stick, a detachable one =P
But that's just my experience, maybe his was a weak one. I dunno, but it hurt pulling out a fragment of PS2 controler out of my cheek.

I don't know much about durability of console controllers as I never had one for a prolonged time. I have a logitech cordless rumblepad 2 for my pc and that one is very strong. It can bounce of the stairs multiple times without any suffered damage. I even think I could throw it out my roof window to the ground without significant damage... I also have some old MSX joysticks which are nutsty fragile and an Atari Jaguar with one controller (I got that one pretty recently) and I must say that that one feels anything but fragile to me and it fits well into my hands. It's a bit big, but it's nice. As for indistructable controllers, take those of the NES, you can throw them against a wall, they shatter, you put them back together with some duct-tape and you're ready to go again

I know many people who now regret selling their older consoles, NES, SNES, Megadrive... Proof that you should always keep ahold of them..or get the games emulated =I

I never had a console when I was younger, so now I search for whatever old (not entirely common) console I can get. I already have an Atari Jaguar and an Atari Lynx. My search continues for consoles like the NeoGeo, Sega Saturn, Famicom, Videopac etc...

Nothing beats playing a game on the real thing. An emulator never gives you that authentic feel, just the fake retro feel. I can tell you this, playing Cybermorph on a Jaguar is much more fun than playing it on project tempest on a pc.
