Arena Tournament guidelines and rules
1.) Roleplaying story-based battle is the same context as the 'duels', paragraph trading while focusing on telling a story about battle, and will probably (due to its nature of lacking any form of altruism) be fairly uncommon unless we all surprise one another and actually do like the guidelines say by being concerned with the story and admitting that yes, that last post was rather clever so yes, you take some damage and possibly even lose.
2.) Art-based battle can take a variety of sub-forms. From taking turns with an opponent drawing out the battle scene to seeing who can draw a cooler design for a hat, these battles are likely to be the most common because many forum users here are artists.
3.) Word-based battle is the exchange of words in a (usually comical) hostile fashion. From mama jokes to debating, this is the section that I will love and Jest will hate, and so if there are any debate tournaments, 10 dollars to a nickel says I'm the one who'll start them. Unfortunately.
Tournaments may be just for fun, or they may include a prize. What that prize is is entirely up to the one hosting the tournament. It's possible that money could be involved (entry fees, and the host pays to host it) in future tournaments, but for now we would like to keep things simple and focused. Some examples of prizes might be a unique item not seen in any shops, a modest cash prize, a custom title (Not just any custom title; a championship title), a commissioned work from one of our artists or writers, or h0t netsexx0r with the Jest sprite at the top of the page.
While each individual tournament can have its own rules (no pencil; all drawings must be done with a pen!), themes (all jokes must be spoken in ye olde tongue!), and anything else the tournament host wishes to throw in, there are a few guidelines here:
1.) No flame wars. Seriously. It's one thing to fire mama jokes back and forth. It's one thing to debate on a subject that two people feel strongly about. It's quite another to start throwing serious insults back and forth. Taunts and other such things during battles are fine; that's more than okay, expected, even. I'd sure as hell mock you if you kept swinging at me and missing. But things like this just have no place in, say, a debate.
2.) No God stuff. Nono, clerical magic and whatnot is fine. It's when you cross the line from 'I know a pretty powerful spell that I can cast twice daily' into 'I have a room-clearing, earth-shattering, mind-blowing spell of +20 KICKASS that PWNS YOU UP LIEK FAST' that we start to hate you. It's okay to do something unexpected and/or just plain impressive, like doing a backflip and following that with a Zelda-style spincut. It's okay to not be meek and assume everything hits you. It's NOT okay to break out a sk8board and do a flaming lip trick off your opponent's face followed by a rain of death spell that makes their corpse disintegrate. We f**king hate people who think you spell 'skateboard' with a number. Plus, we just plain hate skateboards.
3.) Observe the rules of the board you're in. If you're in the main arena board, then unless the first post of a thread says otherwise, it is IN CHARACTER. You are roleplaying. If you want to do a normal, as-you-are-in-real-life duel with another member, that's fine! More than fine; that's awesome. But agree on rules like that before starting and post them at the start of the thread. If you are in one of the two subboards, then things like in and out of character are determined ENTIRELY by the thread. If it doesn't say in the first post, then you may assume that that thread is out of character and that you post as yourself. Those two boards are not intrinsically roleplaying boards.
4.) Don't assume you've won if you come up with a clever idea for an attack, whether that be story-based, art-based, or word-based. Just because your opponent's sword has been knocked to the side doesn't mean s/he can't avoid your would-be fatal blow, or move so that it doesn't kill them.
5.) Have fun. That's an order.
