UW:NH comes in two flavours on the console: Genesis and SNES. The SNES version is only slightly different, but of course it is what I prefer, as ZSNES is probably the best program on my computer right now. The game is also available for PC, and is considered to be Abandonware. It can be downloaded for free at unchartedwatersnewhorizons.com. Just copy/paste it into your browser's URL line. =P
This game is an old gem. You take on the role of one of six characters, who each have their own story, skills, and quests. However, for the most part you're quite free to do as you please - sail the oceans and make discoveries, trade, attack other fleets as a pirate or in the name of your king. You can woo girls at the bar in the cities, gamble the nights away, treat sailors to the port specialty, build new ships, hire new mates, etc. It's very open-ended, though each character has victory conditions that when met, will end the scenario.
Of course, you don't have to meet those conditions.
This is one of those old games that Zade got me to play, and I'm quite glad I did. I just wish there were more games like it. There's a guy working on a C/C++ remake of the game, which I'm really looking forward to. With any luck, it will be modular and moddable.
That said, the SNES ROM, Genesis ROM, and PC version are found on the site above. For an SNES emulator, if you don't have one (shame on you!), can be found at www.zsnes.com. I'd go with v1.42, as that is the latest version that also has multiplayer capacity. This game uses so many random variables that it's impossible to play online, but other games can and should be played with more people.
